Georgian furniture, spanning the reigns of the four King Georges from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber. Designs evolved from heavy, ornate styles influenced by continental baroque towards the refined, neoclassical elegance championed by cabinet makers like Thomas Chippendale and Sheraton.

Master cabinet makers of this era predominantly used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers applied over secondary woods such as oak or pine for drawer linings and carcases. Construction features hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer corners, hand-turned wooden knobs or brass hardware, and pegged or doweled framing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails with irregular spacing, shrinkage cracks appropriate to age, and hand-planed secondary timbers without modern machine marks. Original backboards, hand-forged or cast iron or brass fixings, and natural wax patination built up over centuries also serve as key indicators of period authenticity.

Pairing dark wood antique furniture with neutral, textured walls and modern minimalist art creates a balanced, sophisticated aesthetic. The rich grain of the mahogany adds warmth and depth to a room, working well as a contrasting anchor piece against contemporary upholstery and sleek metallic accents.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading. Clean regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly every six to twelve months to nourish the grain and protect the historical patination.
