FAQs

These tables originated during the British colonial period in India, particularly in regions such as Hoshiarpur and Punjab, where master artisans combined traditional woodcarving techniques with European furniture forms to appeal to export markets.

They are typically handcrafted from dense hardwoods such as shisham or teak, featuring intricate jali fretwork, deep floral relief carvings, and often a clever folding base mechanism.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, traditional joinery without modern metal fixings, natural ageing of the timber, and sometimes traces of bone or brass inlay work characteristic of the period.

Place it as an accent piece beside a simple sofa or armchair to create textural contrast, allowing the intricate geometric carvings to serve as a focal point against clean, contemporary lines.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft brush to reach the recesses of the carving, and apply a natural beeswax periodically to nourish the wood without building up residue.
