Superb Japanese Edo (mid 19thC) pair of gold lacquer sake cup stands (kagetsudai) with ‘four gentlemen’ design of plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. The design also incorporates Ganoderma lucidum fungi/mushrooms. In original wooden box. 10cm x 10cm x 8cm high.

Excellent original condition.

The phrase "Four Gentlemen" in the context of Chinese art and design refers to a group of four plants: the plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. These plants are not associated with the mushroom Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi). The Four Gentlemen symbolize different virtues and are frequently depicted in traditional Chinese art, representing the seasons and embodying qualities like perseverance, purity, righteousness, and humility.

Ganoderma lucidum, commonly known as the reishi mushroom, varnished conk, lacquered bracket or ling chih, is a red-colored species of Ganoderma with a limited distribution in Europe and parts of China, where it grows on decaying hardwood trees. It is used to treat a variety of chronic diseases.

Japanese lacquerware, known as urushi, has a history spanning thousands of years, reaching high levels of refinement during the Edo period (1603-1867) when intricate gold maki-e techniques flourished for aristocratic and samurai households.

These pieces are traditionally constructed from carved wood, coated with multiple layers of refined sap from the lacquer tree, and meticulously decorated with metallic powders such as gold and silver applied during the curing process.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-carved wooden substrates, natural urushi sap that darkens and hardens over time, fine maki-e detailing with microscopic metallic flakes, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and wear.

They serve as sophisticated focal points on console tables, mantels, or display cabinets, bringing historical depth and artisanal craftsmanship into minimalist or eclectic contemporary interiors.

Lacquerware requires protection from direct sunlight to prevent fading and cracking, stable relative humidity levels, and gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without the use of chemical cleaning agents.
