Description

This attractive and very comfortable cast iron garden bench was made to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. We can be certain of this, because the registration number for that year (72957) can be clearly seen within the casting, also the bench ends are decorated with national symbols and flowers of the United Kingdom, including the rose, thistle, daffodil, and shamrock. The wooden slats would have been changed many times over the last 138 years, however, the current set are nicely weathered and structurally sound. The cast iron ends are in good condition with no signs of any damage or repair. A pleasing and interesting antique cast iron bench that is not too large for the average sized garden.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian garden furniture is characterised by heavy ornamentation, intricate floral and patriotic motifs, and durable metalwork made possible by industrial manufacturing advancements of the nineteenth century.

These pieces typically feature heavy cast iron or wrought iron frames combined with wooden laths for the seat and backrest, assembled using traditional bolts and rivets.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as surface pitting, multiple layers of historic paint, makers marks or registration numbers, and heavier gauge metal than modern reproductions.

Position the bench as a focal point against a hedge or brick wall, allowing the weathered patination and classical proportions to contrast with contemporary landscaping.

Maintain the metalwork by gently removing loose paint, treating underlying rust with a suitable inhibitor, and applying breathable exterior paint while preserving the integrity of the timber slats.
