Georgian library steps gained popularity in the 18th century as private home libraries expanded upwards with floor-to-ceiling bookcases, often incorporating clever folding mechanisms or multi-tiered designs.

Master cabinetmakers typically used dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, frequently featuring hand-tooled leather inset treads and delicate brass or gilt detailing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining traditional joinery methods, hand-cut dovetails, the natural patination of the wood, and the type of secondary timbers used underneath.

They function effectively as unique display stands for plants or books, or as functional side pieces in a study alongside contemporary seating.

Maintain the timber using quality microcrystalline wax and protect the leather inserts from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent cracking.
