The canterbury originated in late 18th-century England, traditionally used for holding sheet music, folios, or books, with the first design reportedly commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Authentic pieces from this period were predominantly crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, satinwood, or rosewood, often featuring brass castors and turned or tapered legs.

Authentication involves examining traditional joinery techniques, timber grain characteristics, patination, hand-cut dovetails within the drawers, and period-appropriate hardware such as brass fittings.

This piece works effectively as an occasional stand beside a sofa or armchair, serving to hold current reading materials, magazines, or vinyl records while adding traditional architectural interest to a room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying appropriate natural waxes rather than modern silicone polishes.
