French painted furniture incorporating cane panels gained popularity during the 18th century, drawing inspiration from imported Asian materials and the lighter, more elegant aesthetics of the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. Caning was utilised for ventilation and texture, while painted finishes provided a clean, refined appearance suitable for provincial and urban interiors.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech or oak, featuring hand-woven rattan cane panels inserted into door frames. Joinery often includes mortise and tenon techniques, complemented by traditional gesso or milk paint finishes and brass hardware.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-woven nature of the cane, the type of wood joinery, the presence of period-appropriate wear and oxidisation under the paint layers, and traditional hardware fastenings rather than modern screws.

Such pieces function well as bedside tables or small storage units, adding texture through the cane work and a soft accent via the painted surface. They complement both neutral minimalist schemes and layered, eclectic interior palettes.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the painted finish or dry out the natural rattan fibres, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the cane from becoming brittle.
