This Regency rosewood canterbury magazine rack follows a design by Loudon, showcasing a dark brown timber finish complemented by gilt brass hardware. The upper section comprises an X-frame construction with slatted music dividers, centred on prominent roundel bosses and topped with turned finials. The lower section incorporates a single drawer fitted with two original round brass handles featuring a Prince of Wales design. The framework rests on four turned legs equipped with swivel brass castors. Measuring 50 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, this practical piece functions ideally at the end of a sofa in a living room or study for holding periodicals and sheet music.

Introduced in late 18th-century England, the canterbury was originally designed to hold sheet music and bound scores in music rooms. During the Regency era, architectural pattern books such as those by John Claudius Loudon popularized X-frame variations, which expanded its function to store newspapers, journals, and periodicals.

Regency examples were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany. Construction features include hand-dovetailed drawers, turned spindles, slatted dividers, turned legs, and brass castors for mobility.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer, original brass cup castors, natural timber oxidisation beneath the base, and hand-carved decorative elements such as central timber roundels or turned finials.

A canterbury functions as an occasional storage piece beside an armchair, desk, or sofa. It serves effectively to display large format art books, magazines, or architectural journals while adding rich timber tones to a room scheme.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth along the grain. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent veneer cracking or movement.
