An etagere from the 1930s typically features open shelving with multiple tiers, often combining metals like brass with contrasting inserts such as leather or glass, reflecting a transition towards functional elegance and streamlined modernism.

These pieces traditionally utilised structural brass frames, sometimes cast or tubular, combined with inset surfaces of tooled leather, polished wood, or glass supported by slender legs.

Authentic pieces from the era exhibit period-correct construction methods such as threaded screws, natural patina on the brass, hand-tooled leather borders, and period casters rather than modern reproductions.

It functions effectively as a side table or drinks trolley, pairing well with minimalist upholstery to highlight its metallic sheen and textured leather surface.

Maintain the brass frame with a soft, dry cloth without harsh abrasives to preserve the natural oxidisation, and clean the leather surface using a specialised leather conditioner.
