Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A monks seat, also known as a chair-table or settle-table, is a dual-purpose piece of furniture where the backrest pivots forward over the armrests to transform the chair into a tabletop. Originating in medieval times to conserve space in monastic and domestic settings, the form saw major revivals during the Jacobean, Victorian, and Edwardian periods.

Traditional monks seats are typically constructed from solid oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joinery alongside wooden pivot pegs that allow the backrest to swivel smoothly. Decorative relief carving, panelled construction, and turned legs are standard hallmarks of historical craftsmanship in these convertible pieces.

Authentic early 20th-century pieces display natural wood shrinkage, patination consistent with age around contact points, and traditional joinery rather than modern fasteners. Hand-carved or machine-routed relief decorations typical of the Jacobean Revival style are commonly present on the back panel and lower frame.

Place a monks seat in an entryway, hallway, or open-plan living area to serve as a functional architectural focal point. Its dual functionality allows it to operate primarily as accent seating, which can be folded down into a surface when additional table space is required.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture and finish. Avoid positioning the piece adjacent to radiators or in direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish degradation.
