Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Louis XV style étagère dates from 1860 and functions as an occasional table with three tiers. The piece is formed from warm brown walnut with intricate floral marquetry inlay across the kidney-shaped surfaces, complemented by a pierced brass gallery edging the top tier and eight turned column supports above four outswept legs. The woodwork displays subtle grain variations and polished timber tones alongside delicate light-wood floral inlays and polished metal hardware. Measuring 76.2 cm high, 45.7 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, this multi-tier table provides compact display space suited for an empty corner in a living room, hallway, or bedroom.

FAQs

Originating in late 18th-century France, the etagere became popular during the 19th century as an open-shelved furniture piece designed to display small decorative objects, porcelain, and books within fashionable drawing rooms.

These pieces typically feature fine wood veneers such as walnut, kingwood, or rosewood arranged in intricate floral motifs, often complimented by cast brass or ormolu galleries, mounts, and turned wooden supports.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut timber veneers, irregular hand-chased brass mounts, cast metal galleries with period fixings, and signs of natural shrinkage or oxidation on the underside of the shelving.

Position the piece in an empty corner, reading nook, or alongside low seating as an accent table, curating the shelves with modern ceramics, framed artwork, or small books to contrast historic craftsmanship with contemporary decor.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish to the timber surfaces annually. Avoid abrasive metal cleaners on brass galleries to protect the original patination and keep out of direct sunlight.
