Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror, or pier glass, is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to hang on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier. In French design, particularly from the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors featured elaborate carved wood or gesso frames coated in gold leaf.

Traditional French pier mirrors were crafted using carved pine or lime wood frames, often supplemented with gesso or composition mouldings to form intricate details. Gold leafing was applied using water gilding techniques, and hand-blown glass plates were silvered using mercury backing.

Authentic pieces usually display signs of natural wear to the gilding, revealing red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf. The reverse side typically features hand-sawn wooden backboards, and the glass may show light foxing or small specks from aged silvering.

Place a French pier mirror on a narrow wall space between windows or position it above a console table to reflect natural light. Leaning the mirror securely against a wall creates a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living room.

Dust the giltwood frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or camel-hair brush to prevent lifting thin gold leaf. Never use water or liquid cleaners on water-gilded surfaces, as moisture will dissolve the underlying gesso.
