Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the mid-19th century, French gilt mirrors were typically crafted with solid wooden frames embellished with gesso mouldings and finished in gold leaf. Styles such as Napoleon III feature softly curved upper corners, clean outer profiles, and detailed leaf or floral accents at the corners.

Frames were constructed from pine or lime wood, coated with layers of chalk and glue composition called gesso. Decorative corner motifs were hand-applied, followed by a coloured clay base known as bole before delicate gold leaf sheets were water-gilded onto the surface.

Authentic period examples exhibit gentle wear where the underlying red or dark bole shows through the gold leaf, a process known as rubbing. Original mirror plate glass frequently displays faint foxing and light oxidation, while the back is enclosed with hand-sawn timber panels.

A tall gilded mirror can be leaned against a plain wall or placed in a room corner to maximize light and create an impression of greater space. The ornate gold frame provides a refined architectural focal point when paired alongside contemporary minimalist furniture.

Dust the carved frame regularly using a dry, soft bristle brush, avoiding water or abrasive cleaning solutions that could lift the delicate leaf gilding. Clean the glass carefully with a dry or lightly dampened microfibre cloth, keeping liquids away from the frame edges.
