Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th century during the reign of King Gustav III, Gustavian furniture combines French Neoclassicism with Nordic restraint. Key hallmarks include pale painted finishes, muted tones, fluted pilasters, parcel-gilding, and classical motifs such as lyres, swags, and laurel wreaths.

These pieces were constructed from native northern European softwoods, predominantly pine or birch, coated in gesso and decorated with painted tempera or gilding. Table surfaces frequently featured natural marble tops or painted faux-marble finishes, accompanied by mercury-glass mirror plates.

Authentic examples feature hand-carved timber detailing, layered distemper paint showing natural distress, and traditional mortise-and-tenon frame joinery. Inspection of the reverse reveals hand-sawn pine backboards and original iron fixing brackets.

Position the set in an entrance hall, foyer, or narrow corridor to reflect natural light and create focal height. Keep tabletop styling restrained using minimal decorative objects, such as a single stone urn or glass bowl, to highlight the carved lyre motifs and painted frame.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical polish that could compromise fragile gesso or paint layers. Position the suite away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity to prevent timber movement and paint flaking.
