Edwardian Silver Claret Jug Giant English Chota Peg Whisky Noggin Tot Colonial

1900 - 1920
Description

Giant, English, sterling silver mounted glass Chota Peg / whisky noggin shaped claret jug.

Hallmarked Birmingham 1907 makers mark JTH JHM for Hukin & Heath (John Thomas Heath & John Hartshorne Middleton)

These innovative silversmiths produced much of the work of the radical designer Christopher Dresser and many novelty and miniature works.

This rare, very oversized, Chota Peg probably produced as a whimsical novelty to serve an over large portion of whisky.

The Chota Peg is a miniature jug used for individual servings of alcohol, dating from British colonial India.

Chota is the Hindi word for 'small measure', used for sun-downers.

Plain, unfussy design that exemplifies the English practical, understated approach to quotidian luxury.

Hand made glass the bases cut and polished with star burst.

In excellent condition with no damage or repair.

The domed lid with inscribed initial.

Height 8" or 200mm, weight 796 grams.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian claret jug is a clear glass or crystal vessel fitted with a silver or silver-plated collar, spout, and handle, designed during the early 20th century for serving wine or spirits.

These pieces were typically crafted using hand-blown lead glass or crystal paired with sterling silver or silver-plated mountings, featuring hinged lids and integral glass handles.

Authentic items display official hallmarks on the silver collar or lid indicating the silversmith, purity grade, assay office, and date letter, along with hand-blown glass details like star-cut bases.

Display the jug on a wooden sideboard, drinks trolley, or bar cabinet alongside crystal glassware to highlight its distinctive shape and polished metallic mount.

Wash the interior glass using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding submerging the silver collar, and polish the silver mount using a non-abrasive silver cloth.
