Large Printed Creamware Pottery Jug Pitcher Antique Shakespeare Garrick

18th century
Description

A very large and rare Liverpool creamware jug, circa 1775.

Transfer printed in black with a print taken from a painting by Philip James de Loutherbourg in 1774 showing David Garrick playing Don John in 'The Chances'.

De Loutherbourg as well as being an artist was also a pioneering lighting and theatrical scene designer working for Garrick at Drury Lane.

The reverse of the jug is printed with a bust of Shakespeare surrounded with a swag border with the masks of tragedy and comedy beneath.

A further print below the spout showing ribbon hung emblems of theater, music and literature, a tambourine, triangle, quill pens, mask etc.

In good bright sound condition,some scratches to the transfers, infill repairs to one side of the spout, rim and footrim.

Well restored with minimal retouching of the plumes in Don John's hat, no other over painting to the transfers, no damage to the handle so this large jug can be handled with confidence.

Height 9,5/8" or 244mm, weight 896 grams.

A near identical jug is described and illustrated in the book;

"Printed English Pottery, History and Humour in the

Reign of George III 1760-1820" by David Drakard
