Antique George III Inlaid Mahogany & Burr Yew Occasional Table C.1790

18th century
Description

A Georgian mahogany occasional table, the square top centred with a bookmatched panel of finely figured golden-amber burr yew framed by boxwood line stringing and broad crossbanded borders, set over a flame mahogany frieze bordered with boxwood stringing, all raised on square-tapering inlaid legs, united by swept stretchers supporting a conforming raised undertier.

Conceived in the neoclassical taste of Thomas Sheraton, this is an exceptionally honest and original survivor. To find a table of such delicate design unrestored and untouched is a joy to come across.

Very good antique condition, displaying a deep, warm patina with minor surface marks and gentle grain checking consistent with authentic age, along with expected patches of veneer loss towards the base of the legs. Structurally sound throughout with untouched period joinery, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1790.

This George III occasional table originates from the Georgian period around 1790 and is built from mahogany and burr yew in a rich brown colour. The square top features a bookmatched golden-amber burr yew panel framed by boxwood stringing and broad crossbanded borders, above a flame mahogany frieze with further boxwood stringing. The piece stands on square tapering inlaid legs joined by curved stretchers that support a central square undertier. Surface marks, grain checking, and patches of veneer loss appear near the base of the legs, alongside a deep warm patina across the timber. Standing 71.5 cm high, 48 cm wide and 48 cm deep, the table functions practically at the end of a sofa in a living room today.

Furniture from this period is defined by neoclassical influence, delicate proportions, square tapered legs, and decorative timber veneers such as burr yew and satinwood.

Solid mahogany provided the structural frame, while decorative top surfaces frequently utilised burr yew, tulipwood, or rosewood inlays secured with hand-cut joinery.

Original pieces feature hand-sawn underside timber, hand-cut joinery, subtle shrinkage movement in the wood veneers, and authentic patination around the lower legs.

Positioning the table alongside a sofa or reading chair allows it to function as a lamp stand, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary seating.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically.
