This rare pair of nineteenth century William IV occasional and wine tables exemplifies traditional English country house style. Each table consists of a rich dark brown figured Spanish mahogany hexagonal top with a moulded fore-edge. The tops rest upon tapering ring turned stems with turned collars. These pedestals stand on tripartite triform bases featuring turned medallions and exceptional neat fluted bun feet. The timber exhibits a deep polished finish highlighting natural wood grain variations across the surfaces. Measuring 64 cm high, these compact items fit comfortably in various living spaces. They serve as practical surfaces positioned at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair to hold drinks, books or small decorative items. Their versatile proportions also suit placement in a hallway or as accent pieces in a drawing room.

Originating in Great Britain during the reign of King William IV between 1830 and 1837, wine tables are compact, portable accent tables designed to hold drink glassware or light sources. They typically feature turned pedestals, triform or tripod bases, and geometric or circular tops.

Cabinetmakers predominantly crafted these tables from dense mahogany timber, valued for its grain structure and durability. Construction techniques involved hand-turned central columns, peg joinery, and veneered or solid hexagonal and circular surfaces.

Authentic William IV furniture features substantial proportions, bold turned mouldings, heavy pedestal columns, and sculpted triform bases. Examining the underside reveals hand-sawn timber markings, natural wood oxidisation, and original wooden or brass fastenings.

Their compact scale makes them practical for modern living spaces as occasional drink stands beside armchairs or sofas. Placing a pair symmetrically on either side of a hearth or seating group balances contemporary lines with classical architectural detail.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber finish. Keep the tables away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer movement.
