Russian Enamel Imperial Coronation Khodynka Cup of Sorrows

19th century
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

These enamel beakers were made for distribution, along with food, presents and commemorative scarves, to celebrate the coronation of Tzar Nicholas in May1896. Over half a million people gathered on the Khodynka Field in Moscow in anticipation of the presents, which was far more than the field could safely accommodate, especially as the area in front of the Tsar's podium was dug with trenches due to the area being normally used as a military training ground.  A rumor swept through the crowd that there was not enough food for everyone and the cups contained a gold coin. In the confusion and the crush that ensued, over a thousand people were trampled to death and the event was taken as an omen of things to come for the rest of Nicholas' reign.

In good condition overall, some small enamel chips to the rim and one larger chip to the foot, although it's mostly only visible from the underside.

10.5cm high.

Declaration

Hand of Glory has dated this Imperial Russian Enamel Beaker to the 19th Century.

This nineteenth-century commemorative beaker is made from enamelled steel finished with gold leaf. The exterior displays a multicoloured geometric strapwork pattern in shades of red and blue, complemented by a gilt rim. It features the crowned monogram cypher of Tsar Nicholas II beneath an imperial crown motif and a dated cartouche displaying the year 1896. Signs of age include small enamel chips along the upper rim and a larger chip at the base visible from the underside, alongside general surface wear to the white glaze. The piece measures 10.5 cm in height. Originally distributed during the coronation festivities in Moscow in May 1896, this historical artefact now serves as a striking decorative display item. It works well placed on a bookshelf in a gentleman's library or study, adding a tangible piece of Imperial Russian history to a collection. The multicoloured patterns and traditional iconography create an engaging focal point among books and small artefacts, offering an interesting conversation piece for display in a domestic interior.

Produced to mark the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in May 1896, these enamelled steel cups were intended as gifts for the populace during public celebrations at Khodynka Field in Moscow.

These vessels were stamped from thin sheet iron or steel, coated with a white vitreous enamel base, and printed with transfer designs using metallic oxide inks before being fired and hand-gilded along the rim.

Authentic examples feature the Imperial crowned monogram of Nicholas II on one side, the double-headed Romanov eagle on the reverse, the date 1896, intricate Neo-Russian geometric interlace, and a gilded rim.

Small historic collectables can be styled within a glass curio cabinet, integrated into a curated bookshelf arrangement, or placed alongside leather-bound volumes on a desk.

Keep enamelled metal dry and free from abrasive polishers. Clean lightly using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical solvents that could strip remaining leaf gilding or expand existing enamel chips.
