Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Chinoiserie bamboo etagere is a open-shelved piece of furniture featuring a frame constructed from bamboo poles alongside lacquered wood shelves decorated with Asian-inspired motifs. Popularised during the late 19th century, these items combined natural organic materials with European interpretations of East Asian decorative arts.

These pieces were typically constructed using natural bamboo or cane poles, often scorched to create a tortoiseshell pattern. The shelves were made of wood panels coated in dark lacquer and decorated with gilded or hand-painted botanical and avian scenes.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural variations in bamboo node spacing, scorched surface patterning, and joinery secured with wooden pegs or metal pins. The lacquer panels display natural age-related craquelure, subtle paint loss, and hand-drawn decorative details rather than printed transfers.

Place the etagere in a living room, hallway, or sunroom to display ceramics, books, or potted houseplants. The contrast between dark lacquer and textured bamboo integrates easily with both period settings and contemporary minimalist spaces.

Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the bamboo from cracking and the lacquer from fading. Clean surfaces using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding wet cloths and chemical polishes.
