School House Antiques has dated this Inlaid Syrian Hardwood Bench to the 19th Century.
The bench is an excellent example of the highly decorative furniture tradition of Syria, with the hardwood frame adorned throughout with elaborate geometric patterns, contrasting bands of inlaid timber and finely worked decorative motifs.
The numerous subtle variations and charming irregularities visible throughout the inlay are characteristic of traditional hand craftsmanship, giving the piece a wonderful sense of individuality and authenticity. The slight differences in pattern, spacing and colour add considerably to its appeal and are a lovely indication of its handmade nature.
