Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century French giltwood mirrors are characterized by wooden frames coated in gesso and finished with thin layers of gold leaf. These pieces frequently draw on Neoclassical and Louis XVI design influences, featuring rectangular silhouettes, beaded inner borders, and ornate corner spandrels.

The structure is typically constructed from softwood or hardwood overlaid with gesso, a plaster-like compound carved with decorative motifs. Gold leaf is then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before insertion of silvered plate mirror glass.

Authentic period pieces show natural aging on the backboards, often made from fitted pine or oak panels. The gilded surface typically exhibits light craquelure, subtle wear showing the red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf, and slight oxidisation or foxing on the reflective glass.

A large giltwood mirror functions effectively as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantel, a hallway console, or a dining room sideboard. The warm tone of the gilded frame contrasts with contemporary neutral plaster walls or dark moody paint palettes.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a dry, soft brush or feather duster without liquid cleaners, which dissolve gesso and water gilding. The glass reflective surface should be cleaned with a damp cloth, avoiding contact between moisture and the frame perimeter.
