Gilt oval wall mirrors became popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, notably within French and English Neoclassical and Regency interior design. The oval shape offered a softer alternative to rectangular architectural frames, whilst water-gilded or oil-gilded frames were designed to bounce candlelight around grand reception rooms.

Traditional gilt frames were typically carved from wood or moulded using a carved timber core coated in layers of gesso and composition material. Gold leaf was then applied over a clay base known as bole, and the reflective mirror plate was made from mercury-backed or silvered glass.
