Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French giltwood mirror typically features a timber frame decorated with moulded gesso ornaments and coated with hand-applied gold leaf. Popular during the Louis Philippe and Napoleon III eras, these mirrors often feature clean rectangular lines paired with corner floral motifs or bead moulding.

These frames were constructed from softwoods or hardwoods shaped with carved detailing, then layered with a plaster-like gesso composition. Red or yellow clay bole was applied beneath microscopic layers of gold leaf, resulting in a distinct warm tone as the gilding naturally wore over time.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-cut timber backing boards, natural oxidation or foxing spots on the silvered glass plate, and subtle wearing of the gold leaf that reveals the underlying reddish clay bole. The weight of the timber and depth of the gesso detail also distinguish historical pieces from modern reproductions.

Mount the mirror above a fireplace mantel or position it over a hallway console table to reflect natural daylight and enlarge the visual space. The classical gold leaf frame creates a warm focal point against neutral modern paint tones or dark feature walls.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners which dissolve historic gesso and water gilding. Mirror glass should be cleaned carefully using a damp cloth, taking care not to allow moisture to touch the gilded edges.
