A cushion mirror, originally developed in the 17th century and widely produced through the 19th century, features a main central glass plate framed by raised, angled marginal mirror sections designed to enhance reflection and light.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak frames covered with carved gesso moulding, coated with bole clay, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf water gilding surrounding hand-cut silvered glass plates.

Look for signs of age such as slight foxing on the glass, visible seam lines in the gold leaf, exposed red bole clay under worn gilding, and hand-hewn wooden backing boards.

Positioning the mirror above a mantelpiece or modern console table allows the gilded texture and multi-angled mirror borders to bounce light across contemporary architectural spaces.

Dust the gesso and giltwood lightly with a soft, dry artist brush or feather duster; water and liquid solvents must never be applied as they dissolve traditional water-gilding glue.
