Italian Mirror 19th Century

19th century
Description

A very decorative sectioned wall mirror in the Baroque style. Probably Italian, there is a recessed central mirror plate surrounded by further mirrored plates, all within a gilded ormolu frame which is decorated allover with flora.

The outer frame is made from gesso and is coloured to resemble hardwood. This has been a difficult piece to photograph, and its important to add that there is no damage to any off the mirrors apart from some very small age marks to a couple of them. This is a beautiful piece which could embellish many types of interior.

We can discuss delivery both here in UK and overseas.

Payment by bank transfer, PayPal or card via telephone.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Italian wall mirrors often feature carved wood frames with gold leaf gilding, architectural moldings, and decorative border plates known as marginal or canted glass panels.

These mirrors were constructed using softwoods or walnut carved into detailed profiles, finished with gesso and gold leaf gilding, and fitted with silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving on the reverse timber, natural desilverisation or dark foxing spots on the glass, and red or grey bole clay layers beneath aged gilding.

Position the mirror above a console table, fireplace mantel, or sideboard to create a focal point that contrasts classical gilding with contemporary clean lines.

Dust the gilded wood frame softly with a dry feather duster without liquids, and clean the glass plate using a damp microfibre cloth without allowing water to seep into the frame joints.
