Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian Baroque style mirrors are renowned for their dramatic contours, elaborate carved foliage, and opulent gilded finishes. Emerging in the seventeenth century and revived throughout the nineteenth century, these mirrors emphasise symmetry, movement, and detailed scrollwork.

These mirrors were typically crafted from hand-carved timber or moulded gesso applied over softwood frames. Traditional water gilding using thin gold leaf was applied over a clay bole base, while the mirror plate featured silvered glass.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often display hand-carved joinery, visible wood grain or wire marks on the backboard, and natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate. Wear to the gilding usually reveals the underlying reddish-brown bole clay or white gesso.

Position the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to create a focal point. Combining intricate carved gilding with clean minimalist furniture highlights the craftsmanship of the mirror through visual contrast.

Dust the carved frame gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry artist paintbrush to avoid flaking fragile gold leaf. Never apply water, alcohol, or liquid glass cleaners directly to gilded gesso or antique silvered glass plates.
