Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century arched gilt wall mirror is characterised by a wooden frame coated with gesso and gold leaf, featuring gently rounded upper corners or an arched crest. Popularised during the Louis Philippe and Victorian eras, these mirrors often feature classical beaded mouldings, leaf borders, and decorative corner cartouches.

These mirrors were constructed using a carved timber frame covered with layers of white gesso plaster and red or yellow clay bole. Thin sheets of genuine gold leaf were water-gilded or oil-gilded onto the surface, while the mirror plate was backed with silver or mercury to create the reflective surface.

Authentic pieces show natural wear where the underlying clay bole or timber shows through the gilding, known as rub-through. The original mirror glass will typically display dark spots, desilverization, or subtle fogging known as foxing, alongside fine hairline cracking (craquelure) in the gesso layer.

Positioning an antique gilt mirror above a clean-lined fireplace mantel or contemporary console table creates visual balance through contrast. The warm tones of the gilded frame and patinated glass reflect light to add architectural depth to minimalist or traditional schemes alike.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft, dry feather duster or dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or damp cloths which can dissolve water-gesso finishes. Clean the glass sparingly using a soft lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, taking care not to let moisture touch the gilt edge.
