Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A girandole mirror is a decorative wall-mounted mirror designed with attached sconces or branches to hold candles. Popular from the eighteenth century onwards, the mirror plate reflects the flickering candlelight to increase illumination in low-lit rooms.

Late nineteenth-century mirrors were typically crafted from carved timber or cast composition (compo) over a wooden frame, finished with gold leaf or metallic gilding. The candle arms were often cast in brass or bronze, fitted with silvered or early plate glass mirrors.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age such as gentle wear to the gold leaf, underlying red or grey bole clay showing through high points, dark foxing or desilverization on the mirror glass, and traditional wooden backboards secured with old nails.

Place a pair of girandole mirrors on either side of a larger central feature, such as a fireplace mantelpiece, headboard, or large artwork. Their narrow vertical orientation makes them suited for framing doorways or dressing narrow alcoves.

Dust gilt surfaces gently using a soft, dry bristle brush or feather duster, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners which can lift the delicate gold leaf. Glass should be cleaned by spraying cleaner onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to prevent liquid seeping behind the frame.
