Victorian Gilt Convex Mirror

19th century
Description

A fantastic convex wall mirror dating from the mid to late 19th century. It has a gilded frame with applied ball decoration and an ebonised reeded slip. There is a carved eagle on the top and carved leaf decoration below the mirror.

It is in good condition for its age. The frame has been repainted at some point but the colour is bright and vibrant and it displays well. There are some signs of age and some small chips and minor losses here and there but nothing detrimental. There have been a few old repairs but overall it is strong and sturdy. It has been lightly cleaned and is ready to hang.

Convex mirrors feature a curved glass surface that reflects a wide-angle view of an entire room. Popularised during the Georgian and Regency periods, they were frequently placed in dining rooms so servants could observe guests without staring.

Traditional pieces feature carved timber frames finished with gesso and gold leaf gilding. The reflective element consists of curved glass, often framed by a dark ebonised inner slip and decorated with carved spherules along the moulded frame.

Authentic period mirrors display hand-carved wood beneath layers of gesso, showing natural age wear or micro-cracking known as craquelure. Looking at the reverse reveals original pine backing boards, hand-cut nails, and mercury-amalgamated glass with minor dark spots or foxing.
