Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century arched hall mirror typically features a curved upper rim, detailed wooden or composition moulding, and decorative flourishes such as top cresting. Designed to maximise light in narrow corridors, these frames were frequently finished with gold leaf or painted layers.

These mirrors were constructed using a wooden substrate, often pine or oak, coated with a gesso base. Detailed ornamentations were built up using plaster or composition material, gilded with gold leaf, and occasionally overpainted in later periods with light mineral-based paints.

Authentic period frames show natural signs of age, such as subtle cracking in the gesso, oxidisation or distress on the mirror plate, hand-cut backing boards, and evidence of earlier finishes under upper layers of paint.

An antique hall mirror can be positioned in an entryway or modern hallway to bounce natural light and create visual depth. Pairing a painted historic frame with contemporary console tables creates an effective contrast between textures and periods.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to prevent buildup in delicate mouldings. Avoid liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals on the frame, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso and detach remaining gilt layers.
