We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt mirrors from the late 19th century typically feature hand-carved timber backings coated in gesso and decorated with fine gold leaf application. Common architectural features include arched frames, beaded inner borders, and ornate top crests depicting floral scrolls or classical masks.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or hardwood foundations shaped with gesso plaster mouldings. The decorative surfaces were finished with gold leaf applied over a coloured clay substrate called bole, accompanied by mercury-silvered or early plate glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age such as minor silvering oxidisation on the glass plate, visible joinery on the timber backboards, and faint red bole showing through areas where the gold leaf has worn naturally over time.

An antique French gilt mirror is frequently positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to create a focal point. The metallic texture provides contrast against modern neutral paint tones while reflecting light throughout the room.

Dust the ornate carved frame regularly using a dry, soft feather duster or soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging delicate gilding. Avoid using liquid glass cleaners or chemical solvents near the gesso border, as moisture can dissolve historic water gilding.
