Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries as grand architectural features designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Crafted with elaborate gilded frames, their primary function was to reflect both daylight and candle flame, significantly enhancing light distribution across formal drawing rooms and reception spaces.

Traditional 19th-century mirrors feature a carved timber armature, typically pine or lime, coated in layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and binder) and red or yellow clay bole. Gold leaf was subsequently applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, surrounding a silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved backboards or pine panel inserts, slight irregularities in the hand-cast glass, and subtle oxidation or foxing to the silvering. Additionally, genuine water-gilded frames often show red clay bole bleeding through areas of gold leaf where natural handling wear has occurred over time.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast or mantelpiece to create an immediate focal point. The warm gold tones pair effectively with modern muted colour palettes, dark feature walls, or period plasterwork, bridging classic historical architecture with contemporary furnishings.

Giltwood frames must be maintained exclusively with soft, dry duster cloths or camel-hair brushes to remove dust. Never apply liquid cleaners, polish, or damp sponges to gilded gesso, as moisture dissolves water-gilding glue and causes permanent flaking.
