A very large French antique giltwood mirror of impressive proportions.

In very much untouched original condition, retaining it's original gold leaf water / oil gilding in very good overall condition.

Original mercury silvered mirror plate in near perfect condition, with the most attractive overall sparkle to the silvering, (one tiny fault at the very base of the plate).

Original panelled backing board.

19th-century French gilt mirrors, particularly from the Louis Philippe and Napoleon III eras, are characterised by arched tops, delicate beaded or leaf-moulded frames, and decorative crestings featuring shells, floral swags, or cartouches.

These mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved pine or oak frame covered with layers of gesso. The decorative detailing was moulded, coated with red bole clay, and finished with thin gold leaf before fitting with silvered or mercury glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural wear exposing the reddish bole layer beneath the gold leaf, original backboards made of jointed timber, and subtle silvering loss or foxing on the glass mirror plate.
