Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French gilt mirrors are defined by wood or moulded gesso frames finished with thin layers of gold leaf. They frequently feature classical decorative motifs such as cherubs, urns, floral garlands, and scrolled crestings associated with Neoclassical and Louis XVI revival styles.

These mirrors were constructed using timber frames layered with gesso, a mixture of chalk and binder, which was carved or moulded before water gilding or oil gilding was applied. The glass plates were typically mercury-backed, resulting in subtle surface variations and minor oxidisation over time.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved timber backings, visible red or grey clay bole under worn gilding, and slight foxing to the mirror plate. Modern reproductions often display synthetic resin construction, uniform artificial distressing, and flawless float glass.

An antique gilt mirror functions as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantel, console table, or sideboard, contrasting ornate detailing against neutral walls. Positioning the mirror opposite a light source maximizes light reflection and enhances visual depth.

Dust the frame using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf, avoiding liquid cleaners or damp cloths on the gilded finish. The glass plate should be cleaned using a damp microfibre cloth, ensuring moisture does not contact the frame edge.
