Originating in 19th-century France, Louis Philippe mirrors are characterised by rounded upper corners, a flat base, and clean profiles wrapped in gilded gesso moulding.

These frames were constructed using carved timber covered in gesso and red clay bole, over which thin gold leaf was applied, framing mercury or silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural foxing or de-silvering on the mirror glass, hand-cut timber backing boards, and visible red bole showing through areas of worn gilding.
