Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Chateau mirrors from the 18th and 19th centuries typically feature ornate arched frames topped with elaborate carved crestings, such as scallops, shells, or acanthus leaves. The frames are traditionally finished in gold leaf or soft polychrome tones to reflect light and create visual splendour within high-ceilinged reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood mirrors were built using a carved wooden core, typically pine or lime, coated in layers of smooth gesso plaster. Delicate details were sculpted directly into the gesso before applying fine gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle signs of age such as natural wear to the gilding showing red or grey clay bole beneath, minor oxidisation or foxing on the silvered glass, and hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards rather than uniform machine production.

Large gilded mirrors are frequently positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or entryway console table. The contrast between warm metallic gold and neutral modern walls creates a striking architectural focal point while increasing natural light.

To preserve water-gilded frames, avoid liquid cleaning agents, water, or chemical sprays, as moisture dissolves gesso and loosens gold leaf. Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, applying glass cleaner strictly directly to a cloth rather than the glass itself.
