P0161 A very attractive gilded mirror, having original bevelled edge glass with some foxing in beautifully carved frame with beaded edge and leafy scrolls throughout finished with a shell and floral crest to the top. The frame is richly embellished with classical motifs and beautifully modelled crest, making it a standout decorative item ideal for traditional and modern interiors. This antique mirror retains its original gilded finish, original glass plate and backboards, all in excellent home ready condition. The glass has a hand scribed date 11 3 69 which leads us to believe this mirror was made then. No missing elements, woodworm free and sturdy. All in good condition, sympathetically restored. 1869

FAQs

A 19th-century French giltwood mirror typically features a carved timber frame coated in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf gilding. Frames from this era frequently display classical motifs, delicate bead moulding, and prominent carved crestings influenced by Rococo and Louis XVI designs.

Traditional giltwood mirrors are crafted using pine or lime wood timber frames coated with layers of chalk-based gesso and clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf are water-gilded or oil-gilded onto the surface, encasing hand-cut plate glass mirrors.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carved joinery on the timber backboards, natural oxidisation or foxing to the glass plate, and minor wear to the gilding where underlying reddish clay bole or white gesso shows through.

A giltwood mirror can be positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or dark wood sideboard to add verticality and light reflections. The warm tones of gold gilding create contrast against modern neutral walls and contemporary architectural lines.
