Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III pier mirror is an 18th-century wall mirror produced during the reign of King George III in Britain, characteristically tall and narrow to fit the wall section between windows. These mirrors frequently display Neoclassical motifs such as carved eagles, urns, husk swags, and bead moulding, covered in gold leaf.

Georgian gilt mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with gesso and hand-applied gold leaf using water gilding techniques. The mirror plates during this era were made of blown flat glass with bevelled edges and silvered using a mercury-tin amalgam.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit dark oxidisation spots on the original glass plate, hand-carved joinery, and backboards made of hand-sawn softwood with wire nails or wooden pegs. The gilded surface should show natural wear, exposing red or yellow clay bole beneath the gold leaf in areas of high contact.

Place a pier mirror on a narrow accent wall, above a console table in an entry hallway, or between two large windows to maximise natural light. The gilded finish provides visual warmth and texture when contrasted against contemporary plaster, painted walls, or minimalist architecture.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth without applying water or chemical cleaners, which dissolve original water gilding. Clean the glass plate carefully using a soft cloth dampened with water, taking care not to let moisture seep into the frame moulding.
