Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian hall mirrors, popular throughout the 18th century, feature classical architectural details such as swan-neck pediments, urn finials, carved rosettes, and gilded fillets. They were designed to add light and formality to entryways and receiving rooms.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, often built over pine or oak frames. Gilded elements were crafted from water-gilded gesso and carved lime wood, framing hand-blown silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces usually show hand-saw marks on the unpainted wooden backboards, original mercury glass with gentle silvering degradation or oxidation, and hand-carved joinery rather than modern machine-moulded trims.

Position the mirror above a modern console table or fireplace mantel to create a point of visual contrast against neutral or deeply painted walls. The rich wood tone bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern interior schemes.

Dust the wooden frame gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays on gilt surfaces. Clean the glass plate by spraying cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame.
