Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian fret mirror is an 18th-century wall mirror characterized by an openwork wooden frame featuring intricate scrollwork shapes, known as fretwork, often accentuated with a carved central crest such as a bird or shell.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using native dark hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, frequently incorporating gilt accents, soft-wood secondary backing boards, and hand-cut glass plates.

Authentic pieces typically show evidence of hand-sawn reverse boards, original mercury-glass foxing or silver oxidation, age-related timber shrinkage, and hand-carved joinery along the scrollwork contours.

Positioning a Georgian fret mirror above a console table, mantelpiece, or dining room sideboard introduces verticality, architectural silhouette, and warm wood tones that complement both traditional and minimalist schemes.

Keep the timber frame positioned away from direct heat sources and high humidity, preserve the walnut veneer using a high-grade beeswax polish, and clean the glass plate carefully without applying liquids directly to the wooden edges.
