Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III style fretwork mirrors are defined by flat wooden outer frames cut with elaborate scrolled silhouettes along the cresting and apron. They often incorporate central carved embellishments, such as a gilded phoenix or ho-ho bird, combined with moulded inner frame borders surrounding a rectangular mirror plate.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using walnut or mahogany veneers applied to pine or oak groundwork. The central carved accents were frequently executed in giltwood or carved hardwoods matching the primary frame veneer.

Authentic period mirrors display hand-sawn timber backing boards, original mercury glass with natural surface distressing, and evidence of hand-carved joinery. Genuine age manifests in uneven oxidation on the wood reverse and slight irregularities in the fretwork cutouts.

A fretwork mirror can be positioned above a hall table, mantelpiece, or sideboard to create a focal point. Its vertical proportions and architectural silhouette complement both traditional period properties and modern minimalist schemes.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid applying commercial glass cleaners directly to the mirror plate to prevent chemical liquid from seeping into the wooden border and damaging the backing.
