We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III giltwood mirror originates from Great Britain during the reign of King George III, spanning 1760 to 1820. These pieces are characterised by hand-carved timber frames finished with gold leaf gilding, frequently incorporating Neoclassical, Rococo, or Chippendale design influences.

Frames were typically carved from softwoods like pine or limewood, coated with a gesso base, and gilded using water or oil gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf. The reflective glass was historically produced using a mercury amalgam backing process.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved backboards, signs of natural wear where the underlying red or grey bole shows through the gold leaf, and slight imperfections or oxidisation spots within the original mercury glass plate.

Positioning a gilded period mirror above a clean-lined modern console table or fireplace mantelpiece creates architectural interest and visual contrast between classical carved detailing and contemporary decor.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid glass cleaners or damp cloths on the frame, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso ground beneath the gilding.
