Description

A decorative pair of French early 20th century giltwood and gesso antique wall mirrors in the Rococo style. The shaped frames have scroll and leaf design, with pierced lattice and floral garland to the pediment. The original bevelled mirror plates are in very good condition.

Width - 48 cm (19 inches)

Depth - 6 cm (2 ½ inches)

FAQs

French Rococo style mirrors, originating in the 18th century, feature asymmetrical curves, scrolling acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, floral motifs, and openwork crestings. The frames are typically crafted from carved wood or gesso and finished with gold leafing.

Traditional giltwood mirrors were constructed using hand-carved softwoods coated with layers of gesso glue mixture. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before being burnished with agate stone.

Authentic pieces often show subtle signs of age, including red or grey bole clay visible beneath worn gilding, hand-carved joint marks on the timber backings, and slight foxing or oxidisation on the mirrored glass plate.
