Description

A very fine quality Regency giltwood antique wall mirror with original round convex mirror plate. The frame has a reeded moulded edge, beaded, ribbon and ball design with crisp acanthus leaf and foliate carving to the pediment and base.

The circular convex mirror measure 39 cm (14 ¼ inches) in diameter and is in excellent condition.

Height - 107 cm ( 42 inches)

Width - 58 cm (22 ¾ inches)

Depth - 7.5 cm ( 3 inches)

Circa - 1830

A Regency convex mirror is a circular wall mirror originating from the early 19th century, characterised by a curved glass lens set within a deeply moulded, gilded frame often decorated with spheres and classical foliage.

These mirrors were constructed using carved wood frames coated in gesso, which were then water-gilded using thin sheets of gold leaf. The glass was crafted to form a convex shape to disperse light throughout a room.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved wooden backings, slight imperfections in the convex mirror glass, natural wear or oxidisation to the gilding, and period-appropriate carved motifs such as acanthus leaves or ball mouldings.

A convex mirror functions well as a focal piece positioned above a mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or hung within a gallery wall to reflect surrounding light and offer a wider spatial perspective.
