Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Florentine giltwood mirrors from the 19th century are defined by intricate openwork carving featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, shell motifs, and floral decorations inspired by Baroque and Rococo designs. Crafted primarily in Florence, Italy, these mirrors utilise hand-carved wood covered in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf.

Craftsmen carved the structural frame from softwoods such as pine or lime. Layers of gesso, a mixture of chalk and binder, were applied to smooth the surface, followed by red or grey bole clay before thin sheets of gold leaf were water-gilded and burnished onto the frame.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible signs of hand carving rather than moulded resin or plaster, with natural shrinkage lines near wood joints. The underlying red or grey bole clay often shows through worn gold leaf, and the reverse frame typically reveals hand-sawn timber and aged backing boards.

Position the mirror above a sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to create a central focal point. The metallic carved frame provides structural contrast when placed against dark or neutral painted walls, reflecting ambient light across the room.

Dust the frame using a dry, soft brush or feather duster. Avoid water, liquid cleaning solvents, or spray chemicals, as moisture dissolves water-gilded gesso and damages the delicate gold leaf layer.
