A Fine and Impressive Large Wall Mirror in a Classical Gilt Frame, Circa 1830

19th century
Description

This elegant early 19th-century mirror is set within a richly ornamented giltwood frame of strong architectural form. The frame is surmounted by a bold stepped cornice with dentil moulding, above fluted uprights and a finely detailed inner border decorated with scrolling foliate and vine motifs, all delicately picked out in contrasting dark detailing. The proportions and restrained classical ornament place the mirror firmly within the late Georgian / early Regency period.

The original plate is bevelled and of generous scale, offering excellent depth and light reflection, making it particularly effective in both traditional and contemporary interiors. The gilt surface has mellowed beautifully with age, retaining its original character and warmth, with minor surface wear consistent with date.

Its classical lines and generous size allow it to sit comfortably within country house, Regency or neoclassical schemes.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mirrors from around 1830 display Regency and William IV architectural details, including dentil cornices, reeded columns, decorative scroll brackets, and etched or painted botanical inner borders.

These frames were constructed from carved timber coated with gesso, finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding, and fitted with silvered or mercury glass mirror plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit age-appropriate wear showing red or grey bole beneath the gilding, light foxing on the glass plate, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Place the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to serve as an architectural focal point while reflecting light across the room.

Remove dust using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or wet cloths that can dissolve the water gilding and gesso substrate.
