We are offering to you this Elegant Regency Mirror.

The mirror features a circular, outward-curving (convex) mirror plate set within an ebonized (blackened) inner slip and a deep, ornately carved giltwood frame.

The use of a convex mirror was popular during the Regency period not only for its decorative appeal but also its ability to reflect and amplify light, making rooms feel larger.

The frame is heavily decorated with elaborate carvings in a neoclassical or rococo style, featuring scrolling acanthus leaves at the base and a decorative surmount at the top, likely a stylized shell or foliate motif.

Regency gilt mirrors typically feature elaborate frames constructed from carved wood or molded gesso overlaid with gold leaf. Design traits include neoclassical ornamentation such as shell crests, acanthus scrolls, floral swags, and contrasting ebonised inner borders.

Frames were sculpted from softwood, layered with gesso (a chalk and glue plaster), and coated with red or yellow clay bole before hand-applying thin sheets of gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques. Mirror plates were made using blown glass lined with mercury or silver amalgams.
