Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in mid-to-late 18th-century Britain during the reign of King George III, fretwork mirrors were heavily influenced by the design pattern books of Thomas Chippendale. These pieces featured flat, fretted mahogany silhouettes inspired by Rococo and Gothic scrollwork motifs.

These mirrors were constructed using dense mahogany veneers over a softwood carcass, typically pine or oak. Decorative accents included gilded slip borders surrounding the silvered plate glass and hand-carved cresting ornaments.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-saw marks on the fretwork edges, hand-forged rosehead nails securing the backboard, and uneven thickness in the mercury-silvered glass. The pine backing board will also show natural dark oxidisation from age.

Position the mirror above an entryway console table or a fireplace mantel to draw the eye upward and reflect natural light across the room. The dark timber and classical silhouette create an effective structural focal point against both neutral and bold paint schemes.

Dust the mahogany frame with a soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding modern chemical polishes that cause wax build-up. Apply glass cleaner sparingly directly onto a cloth rather than the mirror face to prevent liquid from seeping behind the gilt slip and damaging the backing.
