Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French gilded mirrors typically feature carved timber frames coated in gesso and decorated with water-gilding or gold leaf application. Designs vary from simple Louis Philippe arched frames to elaborate crestings incorporating mythical figures, shields, and floral motifs.

These mirrors were constructed using a wood base, usually pine or oak, covered with layers of plaster gesso. A layer of bole clay was applied over the gesso prior to laying micro-thin gold leaf, which was subsequently burnished using an agate stone.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit red or yellow bole showing through worn areas of gilding, hand-planed wooden backing boards, and light oxidisation or foxing within the reflective glass layer. Fine hairline cracking, known as craquelure, is also common across the gesso surface.

A gilded mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or hung in a reception room. Positioning it opposite windows helps maximize natural light and adds structural depth to minimalist interiors.

Dust the gilded frame regularly with a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or wet cloths that dissolve water-gesso finishes. Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent the gesso substrate from cracking or lifting away from the timber.
